Abstract

Patients at the hospital do not only need clinical care, but they also need spiritual guidance to get a holistic treatment and comprehensive recovery. This guidance is an essential element in the treatment because people with physical illness will also experience spiritual problems, whether it is little or much. Hospital-Friendly Hospital (HMI) is an effort initiated by the Ministry of Health (MOH) to be implemented in all public hospitals since 2016 for holistic treatment purposes. There are three spiritual guidance levels used to help the patient's treatment process, namely counselling, guidance, and emotional and psychological (psychotherapy) guidance. This article aims to discuss spiritual guidance in HMI through the above three stages in public hospitals at Selangor. The interview was conducted with the religious officers at six pilot hospitals implementing HMI in Selangor, namely Serdang, Kajang, Banting, Klang, Sungai Buloh, and Ampang. The study finds that the three levels were performed, but each hospital has conducted in its way based on their knowledge and experience as there was no specific guidance in its implementation. The counselling and guided mentoring approach are carried out regularly, but for emotional and psychological reinforcement (psychotherapy) approach, it is not fully implemented due to skill constraints. This approach is based more on experiences built on hospital cases.
