Abstract
Fun learning is a teaching methodology proposed to set a relaxing and enjoyful environment to resume effective learning. This study reviewed the problems of reading among students whom are yet to master the minimum performance levels, influences of edutainment in improving reading skills, as well as willingness to learn Malay language. The purpose of the study is to identify the root that cause students in rural areas who do not comprehend reading skills, as well as the influence of edutainment in increasing students' readiness to learn reading. The objectives are focus on learning readiness and the influence of the students’ background. The design of this research is qualitative study, while the sample group is five sixth grade students in a primary school selected from their reading test results. Interview and document analysis are used as the methodology of the research. The study found that students do not master the basic of reading skills due to their low learning readiness such as passive attitude, lack of confidence and laziness in reading. Furthermore, they are also lack of self-motivation and are not keen in learning something they thought difficult. This could be due to the socio-economic status of the students’ family, low level of parental education, as well as the poor learning environment at home. Moreover, parents' dependence on the school and their tied-up of earning a living contribute to their children's learning to read to be neglected. Hence, this study suggests appropriate fun learning methods to be used in the teaching of reading. In conclusion, these findings can aid teachers to identify students’ level of readiness to learn as well as to reorganize lesson strategies in the classroom. The use of fun learning helps teachers to plan effective teaching techniques in developing exceptional individuals.
